June 12, 2009 History in Photos The woman who runs the general store, a friend of Rose's, dug up these photos of my house being moved up the hill in the late '50s. You can see the beautiful, slab stone wall that was in front -- that wall continues in front of the whole line of historic houses including Rose and Marc's. Many people in the town were angry that he destroyed the "facade" of Main Street, and took down his part of the wall. It looks like, after the house was relocated, he bulldozed the bottom of his property to be level with the street, in preparation for erecting his commercial building. We gather he used some of that earth to fill in behind. The dry cleaner business mentioned in the first photo was never built, as I've said; the whole deal fell apart when the post office changed their minds about moving into his proposed building, and then the town wouldn't give him a permit anyway. What a debacle. But how amazing that these photos were preserved! We continue to wrap up paperwork; we got power of attorney for Dar so he doesn't have to be at the closing. He is going to try to come down just after, though, to help with box moving. Chris and Carol are coming over, too, and it'll be the first time any of them see the place! I took a break from packing last night to watch Iron Man. What an excellent movie. I fast forwarded through the credits to see if there was anything tagged on to the end, and sure enough, there was a short scene that hinted at a sequel. I always wonder how many people either sit in the theatre long enough, or bother to ff to the end at home, to see if there is anything else. Anyway, fun among the boxes. Okay, let's get to the list du jour... |
