If You Build It

Oh, golly, it was a fabulous night. In spite of us all being a little under the weather -- there were enough hardcore fans and new converts that we felt loved and adored, not to mention witty, brilliant, and erudite, especially relating the story about Mark's donning of the long-red-wig-and-policeman's-hat during our Debauched South Texas Bacchanal. We sold a boatload of CDs, it seemed, and people came up and told us we had changed their lives. And they weren't kidding.

The only drag was that the expenses are so high at this gig. This weekly series is to benefit various charities, but even they don't get that much from each night. The overhead is such that we only made about $200. It would work out fine if we could fill the room -- at 200 seats, we've pulled it off before in other local venues -- and we'd go home rich. But that first hundred is really just going back to the venue. AND they take 10% of our CD sales, a practice we don't really like but sometimes can do nothing about.

The presenter loves us and it's the same deal for everyone who plays there, so we're not being treated differently. It's just a shame, because people pay good money for their tickets and think they're really helping the cause(s), but the sad fact is that we can't afford to do many gigs like that. It hardly covers the mailing we did.

Having said all that, though, we had a hell of a good time. Our new Avalon guitars made their debuts (I got the pick guard on Puck and replaced the tuning heads with the amber ones they sent from Ireland) and it was a sonic success. We laughed our asses off, too -- and that's my final measure of a good gig.

Tomorrow we're in Massachusetts. I hope people come.
